Although this image is painted in a slick, sharply defined style typical of much Pop and cartoon-inspired art, its mood reflects none of the humor often found in those styles. This vastly enlarged section of chain link fence, painted in somber colors, connotes being locked out of, or into, someplace. That may reflect the prevailing political climate when this piece was painted, a time when the Vietnam War and the Cold War were both oppressive presences in American life.
