More Information

Akron-born artist Frank A. Werner specialized in portraits of prominent Midwestern figures. In 1919, he painted Charles W. Seiberling Jr., eldest son of the Goodyear Tire co-founder (Charles Sr.), shortly after his return from World War I. Seiberling is shown in full military uniform with medals and insignia, a clear indication of his service and bravery during a difficult campaign as a member of the 332nd Infantry. Werner’s precise brushwork captures both the dignity of the sitter and the fine details of his uniform, reflecting the artist’s skill and focus. At the time, portraits like this were common among elite families to honor loved ones and preserve their legacy. This painting serves not only as a personal commemoration but also as a symbol of status within Akron’s influential industrial community.
