Fabricators September 22, 2018- March 3, 2019 Judith Bear Isroff Gallery Theresa Bembnister Lucas, who taught at Kent State University from 1969 to 2004, applied pigment to the paper surfaces of his paintings using a cheesecloth. The artist worked on handmade tables or directly on the floor, then hung his paintings vertically to examine them and consider his next steps. This untitled work exhibits long, vertical creases from folds in the paper substrate, along with collaged fabric, cardboard and tape. Lucas displayed the finished work by pounding nails through the metal grommets on the edges and hanging it directly on the wall, foregoing the formality of a traditionally stretched painting.
