More Information

A self-taught artist, Daphnis came to the United States in 1930. He was inspired to explore interactions between colors and the energy they generate after traveling to Greece in 1950. “Even though it’s where I’m from,” said the artist, “there was something that happened with the light and the forms—I could see everything flat, I couldn’t see any detail at all.” He experimented with making colors vibrate, come forward and recede on the canvas. The arcs that form the basis of his abstract patterns are created with a large compass-like instrument that he devised.
