Fabricators September 22, 2018- March 3, 2019 Judith Bear Isroff Gallery Theresa Bembnister Shields grew up on a farm in central Kansas. He learned how to sew from his mother and grandmother, who were avid quilt makers, and he studied costume design before moving to New York City to pursue a career as an artist. Shields colored his canvases with fabric dye, stitched beads to their surfaces and used a sewing machine to draw on them with thread. “I learned that canvas was a material before I learned that it was stretched and put on stretcher bars,” the artist remarked.
