Fabricators September 22, 2018- March 3, 2019 Judith Bear Isroff Gallery Theresa Bembnister In 1973, Sam Gilliam began working with William Weege, the master printer who also collaborated with Alan Shields. Weege introduced Gilliam to stitching paper with a sewing machine, a method he adopted from Shields. For Thursday, Gilliam laid a handmade sheet of paper next to another sheet embellished with screenprinting. Contrasting colors and patterns appeared in Gilliam’s paintings around the time he made this print. The artist achieved this effect by collaging cut-out pieces of canvases together with fiberglass tape.
