More Information

An accomplished painter and printmaker, James McGarrell is noted for complex compositions that combine realist representation and fantasy. Drawing on diverse sources, including Matisse, Indian miniature painting and African textiles, McGarrell composes scenes filled with incident and ambiguity. For 'Quotation with Twister', the artist presents a view within a view, a “window into the world.” Likewise the landscape vista is divided into two sections by an asphalt highway. In the foreground, a man’s leg mysteriously emerges from under a table that supports a compartmentalized still life. Nearby, indistinct objects protrude from a satchel, offering colorful accents. Beyond, approaching tornados forming in a brilliant sky threaten both the line of trees and cultivated fields that extend into the distance.
