These color separations, similar to those used to make color reproductions for books and magazines, are studies for Close’s painting of Linda. His technique, which relies on photography, suggests a bond between contemporary portraiture and mechanical reproduction. Close’s works are as much about the technique and process of making art as they are about the images he paints.
