Tryon rarely painted in watercolor, but the delicate shades of blue, brown, and white in this early work depicting Rhode Island Sound foretell the soft tonal effects he later achieved in his oil paintings. The inclusion of a lone boatman drifting on the sea lends the work a melancholy tone that characterizes almost all of Tryon's art.
