This image, the photojournalist's most famous, symbolized not only spontaneous passion but also summed up the return of the joy of life to post-war Paris. In 1993, a search for the young couple led to the disillusioning discovery that they were models posed by the photographer. Doisneau hired them to kiss in different Parisian locales until he got the image he wanted. The work's immense popularity attests to its expression of a great human truth despite the fictional nature of its creation.
