Rosenquist started his career as a sign and billboard painter but eventually moved into the world of fine art. His early commercial work influenced not only the imagery he used but also the size and shape of his art. He often works in large-scale horizontal formats that resemble billboards. Long fascinated with the cosmos, technology and scientific theory, in this print Rosenquist incorporates imagery that suggests DNA symbols, electrical circuits or space exploration. The popularity of space travel in the media throughout the 1970s also influenced the artist. The title Coin Noir means “black corner” in French.
