This image depicts the heart of what is now Cuyahoga Valley National Park, showing the river, the canal towpath, and the barge channel. Ketchum was interested in the history of this area, and how products and people were towed between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River using barges and teams of mules that slowly pulled the boats through the historic Ohio and Erie Canal. This was a vital connection for commerce from 1827 to 1913. This image depicts a section of what is now the Towpath Trail, a hiking and biking pathway that spans over ninety miles. Managed by multiple trail partners, the twenty-mile section of the Towpath Trail that runs through CVNP is accessible twenty four hours a day, allowing nocturnal wildlife viewing.
