This famous photograph of demonstrators being shot by police with fire hoses was taken on May 3 and appeared just two days later in Life magazine. Pictures of the Birmingham protests documented the violent means used by officials against the demonstrators, many of whom were children. These images made many Americans realize for the first time that their country did, indeed, practice racial brutality. Moore was injured while photographing demonstrators on May 3, but kept on shooting until he was arrested on May 7. After jumping bail the next day, he was forbidden to reenter Alabama and had to stay away from his home and family for a year.
