At the turn of the twentieth century, camera clubs were the major venues for photographic instruction and exhibition. J. Dwight Palmer, an Akron businessman, belonged to the Akron Camera Club. This photograph was undoubtedly shown there. Thanks to labels on the back, we know that it was exhibited in Philadelphia and Chicago in 1901. Palmer’s carefully arranged composition includes a bud, a flower in its prime and ones that are slightly past prime.
