Joan Liftin is an accomplished photographer and photo editor. The artist’s first photograph for her book Drive-Ins, which was published in 2004, Ohio documents a family gathering Lifton encountered on a trip she made to Columbus to visit a college roommate. The artist notes that she was “was turned on by the very laid back and easy scene at the drive-in, which was new to me because I was an urban kid and had never gone to one. From then on, until the book was published, I began to seek them out whenever I was alone in a town out in a rural area of the country. I liked the people, the atmosphere, and the constant verbal criticism hurled at the screen by the patrons.”
