More Information

This photograph is a composite of 300 digital images transmitted by a camera atop the Pathfinder spacecraft that landed on Mars in July 1997. (This craft, a precursor to the 2004 launched 'Spirit', was called Carl Sagan Memorial Station during its mission.) The image presents a 360-degree view of the craft's landing site in Mars's Ares Valles region. With its hazy brown atmosphere and dusty, rock-strewn landscape, this vista possesses an eerie beauty quite different from idyllic views of the earthly realm.
