This image of a rainy day in the Flats, one of Cleveland’s industrial districts, is part documentation and part imagination. The waterworks buildings along the Cuyahoga River, a spherical gas storage tank, an iron ore bridge crane and the Terminal Tower in the distance were all part of the landscape but were probably not visible from a single viewpoint. The stylized, curvy lines of the water and areas of intense color reflect Biehle’s passion for modern German art as well as his early training with his father, a decorative mural painter in Cleveland.
