Avant-garde composer and writer John Cage devoted his career to overturning longstanding traditions. In this piece, Cage’s first foray into visual art, he used the Chinese soothsaying book, the I Ching , to determine the placement of each word or fragment. These full or partial words were selected from the dictionary using a complex system based on chance. They were then printed onto sheets of Plexiglas, creating what the artist referred to as “Plexigrams.”
