Nickle’s collages center on subtle color play, the harmonious balance of shapes, and the reliance on intuition when making works of art. He adjusted, removed, and added elements depending on the feeling that each change evoked in him. He preferred to use scraps of paper he found along city streets; their natural, weathered appearance enhanced the poetic tone of his works. Nickle’s refined aesthetic sensibility was matched by his attention to craftsmanship. He made his own stainless steel frames and mounted his collages onto sheets of plexiglass so that they seem to float within the frame.
