Acconci’s performance art starts with a written description. For Step Piece, 1971, “each morning, during the designated months, I step up and down the stool at the rate of 30 steps a minute. Each morning, the activity lasts as long as I can perform it without stopping.” The photograph is documentation of the art. Its modest scale and quasi-scientific presentation show Acconci valuing art as idea and activity rather than as physical product – and perhaps spoofing boring, mundane performance art.
