Inspired by a tiny photo in a real estate handout, this drawing reflects Kanwischer’s interest in how we find meaning in physical spaces. In its original context, the image was meant to sell a house, but it actually tells us more about what people want inside their homes—a tidy space with plenty of furniture and some favorite decorative objects. “We invent meanings for spaces,” says Kanwischer, “and that meaning and what we value change over time.”
