Self-taught as a photographer, Sandy Skoglund closely scrutinized commercial food and liquor photographs as a young artist to better understand her adopted medium. Her earliest photographic works pictured baked goods, fruit and frozen vegetables arranged on decorative paper plates and shelf liner. Skoglund gained notoriety for her later photographs of surreal scenes staged in life-sized sets she designed herself. In Body Limits, Skoglund revives her interest in pattern and food. The artist aligned the stripes of meat and fat from a 30-pound package of bacon, then covered a chair, mannequins and the walls and floor with the greasy, fleshy material. Skoglund repeated this process three times before achieving the final composition for her photograph.
