More Information

The research involved in the development of the atomic bomb also spawned beneficial uses of radiation, such as radiation therapy. This patient is being treated for cancer of the parotid gland, a major salivary gland located near the border of the lower jawbone. Nagatani considers this image to represent the “mismatch of strengths between radioactivity and genetic material.”
