In New York, Meyer “found this [Bible salesman] with hands like an El Greco figure. It was impossible to make the background any better due to the limitations of space and optics. In . . . some other pictures I had taken earlier on that same day and on the same street, I found . . . steam that was enveloping the people. I was able to simulate the steam around his hands and around the Bible digitally, at which point the image—as I see it—took on a totally different dimension. And though it stretches the conventional journalistic boundaries of today, it is truthful to New York.”
