Leonard discovered his “trademark” backlit effect, seen in this photo, when one of his front flash bulbs failed to fire during a yearbook shoot while a student at Ohio University. Leonard explained, “Photography is painting with light. . . . I wanted to capture the music, but I had to interpret it with black and white, with light, with shades and shadows.”
