The Great Menhir dates back to about 2000 BCE and is located six miles from the French village of Carnac, where there are a number of other megalithic sites. The term “menhir” refers simply to a large upright stone; this one was probably sixty feet tall before it fell. It may have been used by pre-Celtic people to map lunar cycles.
