More Information

The Vogels’ limited budget and need for small artworks prompted Highstein—who makes large-scale drawings and installations—to pull out an extensive collection of notebook drawings, which he had never before shown to anyone. After looking through the notebooks with Highstein, the Vogels purchased several drawings. The artist describes, “We became quite close in the process, and I began to understand how perceptive [Herb] and Dorothy were about the art making process.” Horizontal/Vertical is a drawing of a “Pipe Piece” that Highstein produced for gallery exhibitions in Los Angeles and in New York. [It] is a continuation of a series of large-scale seamless steel pipe installations that the artist began in the early 1970s.
