More Information

The ancient city of Tiwanaku is located in the department of La Paz in modern Bolivia. Tiwanaku was first settled around 1200 BCE and continued to develop until it eventually became the capital of an empire that covered most of Bolivia and also extended into southern Peru, northern Chile and parts of Argentina. The influence of Tiwanaku peaked between 500 and 900 CE, then began to decline in the 11th century and fell away altogether early in the 12th century.
