One of the hallmarks of Nettles’s work is her ability to use what is closest to her—a child’s drawing or her own body—to express herself. She expertly transformed such personal imagery into dreamscape and metaphor. The prints from this series explore the “fears and innocent delights” of her children, then ages four and seven, by incorporating their drawings and sculptures into her fantastical landscapes. These images not only address Nettles’s parental concerns and anxieties, but they also reflect her flexible and inventive use of materials and processes. Here she uses both photomechanical etching and handwork on a copper plate to make the prints.
