More Information

Noted for her unusual combination of materials and complex ideas, Meridel Rubenstein uses our connection to place as an ongoing theme. The ancient tree central to this composition is surrounded by later construction, suggesting how dramatically its environment has changed. 'Temple Tree, Vietnam', from the Hien Lam Pavilion in Hue, is part of a series of photographs that features the oldest trees in the United States and Vietnam. In her accompanying text, Rubenstein notes that “In Vietnam, the oldest trees endure because they are taken care of and protected,” in contrast to America where “the oldest trees survive because they are too difficult to find.” The shimmering image was realized by digitally printing on coated handmade bark paper.
