Marilyn Bridges photographs her subjects from 300 to 500 feet in the air, shooting through the open door of a low-flying Cessna plane. The marks humans leave on the earth’s surface, particularly those of commemorative and sacred sites, fascinate her. The artist’s subject matter includes both modern and ancient structures, as demonstrated by this image of the Washington Monument and the nearby photograph of the Conical Mounds of Effigy National Monument, constructed by American Indians between 1400 and 750 B.C. “Monuments,” Bridges writes, “are meant to be testimonies to permanence. Yet, ruins show us the nature of impermanence.”
