Brinsley Tyrrell taught at Kent State University from 1968 to 1996. Although he primarily worked as a sculptor, Tyrrell started making drawings of the surrounding countryside after moving to a farm outside of Ravenna, Ohio, in 1975. In 2007, he began using the large enamel kiln at Kent to realize a commission for a public artwork at the 117th Street RTA Station in Cleveland. Since then, Tyrrell returned to creating compositions in glass enamel that reflect his deep connection to Northeast Ohio’s landscape. Over the years, Tyrrell has achieved an intimate understanding of enamel and its potential to convey the changing moods of his natural surroundings.
