In most of his work, Alma-Tadema depicted the leisure activities of the ancient world's upper class. Here, three young women perched high above the sea watch a Roman fleet return to port. The dramatic vertical perspective gives a sense of vast space and also reflects Alma-Tadema's interest in the compositions found in photography and Japanese prints.
