The neighborhood around Jane Cooper Elementary School was one of Detroit’s worst in the late 1990s. According to the mayor’s office, it had "more children, more people living in poverty, a greater proportion of high school dropouts, and a larger percentage of violent juvenile offenses than the city as a whole." Most of the houses around the school were demolished for an industrial park that has never been built. Prairie has begun to reclaim that land. The school, built in 1920, was closed in 2007. Left unsecured, it was ravaged by scrappers. In 2009 the site was sold and the building on it was demolished.
