More Information

Avant-garde composer and writer John Cage devoted his career to overturning longstanding traditions. In this piece, Cage’s first foray into visual art, he used the Chinese soothsaying book, the 'I Ching' , to determine the placement of each word or fragment. These full or partial words were selected from the dictionary using a complex system based on chance. They were then printed onto sheets of Plexiglas, creating what the artist referred to as “Plexigrams.”
