Sommer painted countless portraits of people he knew; he rarely painted strangers. Children became one of his favorite subjects and he often featured neighborhood children and grandchildren in his works. Sommer depicted children as psychologically intense and serious, as little adults sitting quietly, denied the innocence and pleasures of childhood.
