More Information

This drapo by Roudy Azor depicts the marriage of La Sirene and Agoueh, the Vodou king and queen of the sea. La Sirene draws historical inspiration from the mermaids and sirens that can be found in many different cultures, while Agoueh is known to be an admiral and the captain of a great ship called the Immamou. As Haiti is an island nation, the pair are significant lwa, together representing the depths, mysteries, and changeability of the sea. In Azor’s composition the two are surrounded by La Sirene’s coterie of mermaid spirits, while the man and woman at the bottom of the flag may suggest a human couple whose marriage is placed in parallel with that of the two lwa.
