Francis Meyers graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1951, where he taught painting and drawing until his retirement in 1991. He received numerous mural commissions throughout his career from Cleveland businesses and cultural institutions. The large, horizontal format of The Garden may reflect Meyers’ work on mural projects. In this painting, he explores intersections between figurative and abstract imagery. Forms that relate to the body flow into densely painted areas where planes of shape and color hover on the painting’s surface or recede into space. The Garden was exhibited in the 42nd May Show of the Cleveland Museum of Art (1960) as well as the CMA’s 32nd Travelling Exhibition of Oils by Cleveland Artists (1961), before entering Akron’s collection in 1964.
