A flock of bird sculptures has migrated to the Museum’s lobby! Join us in celebrating Birdsong, a unique multi-faceted art installation presented by Door2 Art Studio that features over 150 bird sculptures hand painted by local artists. This installation will be on view until the end of 2024.

What meaning can be found in a house, a skyscraper, or a storefront? What do we feel when we look into a room, out a window, or down a street? Are the spaces we construct ever just brick, wood, and metal, or do we necessarily make them something more?

Zeerak Ahmed: Mother, I Am Compelled To Leave / اماّں میں تو پاہونی

In creating her sound and video installation titled Amma Mein Tou Paahonee / Mother, I Am Compelled To Leave, Zeerak Ahmed (born 1990, Lahore, Pakistan; lives New York, New York) drew from the folk music traditions of her family’s native region of Uttar Pradesh, in northern India. The songs included in the installation are fleeting for many reasons. They come from a culture that was severely disrupted by the partitioning of the Indian subcontinent in 1947—a time of bloodshed and migration, during which Ahmed’s Muslim family relocated to the newly formed nation of Pakistan. They are in the dialect of Purbi, which is no longer spoken by the migrants who settled in Pakistan. They are part of an oral tradition and were never written down.

Michelangelo Lovelace: Art Saved My Life

Marilyn Stafford: A Life in Photography

Marilyn Stafford (1925–2023) was born in Northeast Ohio, acted on the stage in New York City, sang for chic clubgoers in Paris, met celebrities and politicians, and traveled the world. Amid this fascinating life, photography became her passion, leading to a career that spanned four decades, from the 1940s until 1980. Opening in February, Marilyn Stafford: A Life in Photography highlights the work, people, and issues that were important to the artist. The exhibition provides a reflective and personal look at significant events of the twentieth century through Stafford’s unique point of view.

Two Ohio artists transform a Museum gallery into an immersive, colorful, sensory experience. Natalie Lanese and Andrea Myers are teaming up for this endeavor, each harnessing their dramatic use of color and scale to turn ordinary walls and floors into an unforgettable environment for visitors to enjoy. While Myers typically works in fabric and Lanese in paint, they’ll combine techniques and materials in this exhibition.

Barbara Stanczak Spirit and Matter

Stanczak committed to working with wood and stone only after a long process of discovery. Born in Germany in 1941, she moved to the United States in 1960 to assist her grandfather in painting church frescoes, and later worked in handmade paper, metal, and a variety of other media. She also worked alongside her husband, Julian Stanczak, whose paintings and prints were celebrated at the Akron Art Museum with a one-artist show in 2013. As her own career evolved throughout her thirty-seven-year tenure as a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Barbara carved her first wooden sculpture in 1992. “I was tired of searching,” she recalls. “It was time to arrive!”

Reflections

September 8 – December 17, 2023 | The Bud and Susie Rogers Garden

Bahareh and Farzaneh, together known as the Safarani Sisters, are twins who began painting at the age of thirteen in Iran. They received BAs in painting from Tehran University before relocating to Boston, where they still live, and earning MFAs at Northeastern University. The Safarani Sisters incorporate painting with video and performance art. Their hybrid works are thought-provoking and transformative experiences that weave loose but striking narratives.
