Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present

Rock 'n' roll music relies on images to communicate its message of rebellion, freedom and personal reinvention. Who Shot Rock & Roll, organized by the Brooklyn Museum of Art, is the first major museum exhibition on rock 'n' roll to put photographers in the foreground, acknowledging their creative and collaborative role in the history of rock music.

Detroit Disassembled: Photographs by Andrew Moore

Andrew Moore’s photographs of the Motor City are sublime—beautiful, operatic in scale and drama, tragic yet offering a glimmer of hope. They are the subject of Detroit Disassembled, an exhibition organized by the Akron Art Museum making its debut here before touring nationally.

Arctic Re-visions: Isaac Julien’s True North

The sound and video installation True North (2004) is a journey into the beautiful yet terrifying midst of a sublime continent. Internationally acclaimed British artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien immerses viewers in the haunting landscape of the North Pole, which has seduced scientists, explorers, writers and visual artists since the 19th century. This presentation of the three-screen multi-media installation will mark the debut of this important work from the museum’s collection.

Looking for the American Dream: Andrew Borowiec’s Ohio Photographs

Nuclear Enchantment: Photographs by Patrick Nagatani

Fascinated by his new home state’s marriage with the nuclear industry, Patrick Nagatani began the Nuclear Enchantment series when he moved to Albuquerque in 1987. This exhibition, featuring around 25 works from the series, is drawn entirely from the collection of the Akron Art Museum.

This fall marks the 150th anniversaries of John Brown’s anti-slavery raid on Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, and his December 2, 1859 execution. To commemorate this famous Akron resident, the Akron Art Museum presents selections from Jacob Lawrence’s celebrated print series The Legend of John Brown.

Familiar Faces: Chuck Close in Ohio Collections

Renowned for reinventing portraiture in the late 1960s, Chuck Close (b. 1940) is one of America’s most important contemporary artists. He masterfully employs a multitude of media to create monumental portraits of his family and friends. The Akron Art Museum, an institution with a longtime commitment to Close’s art, is organizing an exhibition of the artist’s work from collections throughout Ohio.
