America As It Was: The Photojournalism of Esther Bubley

In 1940 at the age of nineteen, a petite, energetic, and determined young woman named Esther Bubley (1921-1998) moved to New York with the dream of becoming a professional photographer. by the time she was thirty, Bubley had become one of the preeminent freelance photographers of America's golden age of photojournalism. In addition to photographing worldwide for prestigious clients including UNICEF, Life magazine, and Standard Oil, she exhibited her images in museums and galleries including New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Indivisible: Stories of the American Community

With images and words that stir the heart, Indivisible: Stories of American Community celebrates the lively state of documentary photography in America and the remarkable success of grassroots social movements across the country. The exhibition combines the power of still photography with the directness of first-person narratives in the form of audiotaped interviews that will be available to all museum visitors-to show how local heroes are changing America.

A centerpiece of the show is a large-scale photographic installation, Communicating Vessels, by Cleveland-based artists Holly Morrison and Mary Jo Toles. Morrison and Toles' work is composed of 62 circular photographs of parts of the human body, including the brain (depicted through imaging from an MRI). The surreal images in Communicating Vessels serve as a subtle reference to the theme behind the work: the body's and the brain's movement between sleep and wakefulness and the differences and similarities between those two states.

The museum collects John Sokol

Akron artist and writer John Sokol has received national recognition for his innovative painting, drawing and printmaking. This exhibition, on view in the McDowell Gallery, focuses on two bodies of work by the Canton-born artist. Word Works plays upon the idea of image and text while his Tar and Varnish series looks at the idea of myth. Despite the differences in style, subject matter and media in the two series, one trait is constant: Sokol's work is inspired by literature.

Lee Krasner

Lee Krasner is the first full-scale retrospective of the major American painter Lee Krasner (1908 - 1984) since her death. Krasner was the only female associated with the first generation of the New York School. This exhibition articulates her critical contributions to the movement and brings an important feminist perspective to the discussion of Abstract Expressionism. Krasner's work demonstrates an ongoing artistic dialogue with a diverse range of artists, including Hans Hoffman, Willem de Kooning, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, and her husband, Jackson Pollock. Krasner was influenced by Pollock's work but she was a powerful influence on his work as well.

Drawings by Dr. Seuss

The works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to generations as the beloved Dr. Seuss, have entertained and educated children and their parents for over half a century. In fabricating tales and bringing fantastic creatures to life in the imaginations of young and old alike, he gave us the likes of the Cat in the Hat, Yertle the Turtle, the Lorax, and the Grinch. Drawings by Dr. Seuss, drawn from the Dr. Seuss Collection of the Mandeville Special Collections Library, University of California, San Diego, will feature the original artwork, including sketches, ink and gouache drawings and hand-colored prints, that Geisel created for his many books. Images from Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who!, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and of course, The Cat in the Hat, will be on view.

The Art of Movement: Dance Photographs from the Carol Halsted Collection

The show presents not only the art of dance but also that of photography. Halsted's holdings represent nearly a century of dance as captured by the most important photographers of the time, including Margaret Bourke-White, Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Also represented are those who have specialized in images of the dance, including Barbara Morgan, Lotte Jacobi, Philip Trager and Lois Greenfield.
