MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Carol Ver Wiebe
Bloomington, IN
When did you become a member of the Akron Art Museum?
In the early 2000s, when my daughter Ann moved back to Akron. Of course, we had already visited the Museum while she was attending the University of Akron.
Why did you continue your membership even though you live out of state?
Supporting what’s important to my family has always been a priority, and I genuinely love the Akron Art Museum. As a former docent at my local museum, I understand the value of membership and staying connected to the arts. Akron holds a special place in my heart, and my daughter is also a member. Every time I visit, I make a point to stop by the Museum—it’s a tradition I cherish.
Why is art important for individuals, families, and communities?
It just is! I can’t imagine a life without art. It brings beauty, connection, and inspiration that enriches every stage of life.
How did you fall in love with art?
I’ve often reflected on that! I think it started with my family, especially my mother, who had a strong appreciation for art. My parents joined book-of-the-month clubs and often received art books from museums, so I grew up surrounded by images of famous works. That exposure helped me discover my own tastes—sometimes you don’t know what you love until you see it! I’ve always been drawn to contemporary art, but I enjoy a wide variety.
Are particular works in the collection or in certain exhibitions special to you?
Absolutely! Chuck Close’s Linda and El Anatsui’s Dzesi II are particularly beautiful and emotional for me. I also loved the recent Michelangelo Lovelace exhibition. The Akron Art Museum does such a wonderful job curating a wide variety of works—it’s always a joy to see what’s on display.
