When did you first get involved with the Akron Art Museum?
I’m originally from Jackson, Florida, and I’ve always loved art history. I attended secondary school in Massachusetts and later majored in art history in college. After graduation, I moved to New York to work for the Italian Embassy—where I was the only American in the office. New York is where I met my husband, Richey, who hailed from Akron. His family owned the Sun Rubber Company.
When we moved to Akron in 1963, the first thing I did was visit the Akron Art Institute. I became friends with Leroy Flint, who was the Institute’s director at the time, and quickly got involved as a volunteer. Eventually I was hired as a library registrar for a few years. I truly enjoyed working in the office, which is why I am supporting the office space location in the current renovation.
I was one of the first women to serve on the Museum’s board, a role I held for fifteen years. I eventually became the board secretary. I helped with fundraising for the Museum and was here for the first exhibition of works by Robert Glenn Ketchum, during the early days of the environmental movement.
In addition to board service, I participated in the Artmobile program, worked in the Museum’s garden alongside the Akron Garden Club, and helped chair various Museum events as well as others around the city.
Over the years, I became involved in numerous organizations throughout Akron. It was a rewarding challenge to learn about the city and its people—especially since I wasn’t originally from here. I had the pleasure of working with amazing individuals like Ann Brennan, Susie Rogers, Tom Merryweather, George Klein, and many more.
Why is art important for individuals, families, and communities?
Art brings culture to people who might not have the opportunity to study it formally. Every Museum visit is a learning experience—you walk away with new ideas and inspiration. Art uplifts people. It puts them in a good mood!
Which particular exhibitions or events have you most enjoyed?
I really loved the El Anatsui exhibition—it was an incredibly fascinating contemporary showcase. I also enjoyed Nick Cave’s work. There have been so many exhibitions I’ve liked over the years. The Masked Balls were another highlight—so much fun and a wonderful way to support the Museum.
