Amanda King

(Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1989 - )

American

The artist has provided the following biography:
Amanda D. King uses arts and culture to envision possibilities for transforming individuals, communities, and society. Her multidisciplinary expertise in visual art, jurisprudence, art history, and design informs her socially engaged practice, which uses visual communication, cultural strategy, and arts education to mobilize her community and reciprocate grace.
King earned a J.D. at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and an A.B. in art history at Bryn Mawr College. She lives in Cleveland, Ohio, where she works and serves as co-founding creative director of Shooting Without Bullets. As creative director, she designs, develops, and materializes the enterprise's creative vision and cultural production.

King has elsewhere written an additional statement about her artistic practice:
Amanda's work explores Black subjectivity and seeks to awaken society to the enduring struggles and residual strengths of Black people. She is interested in the nexus between the experiences of Black folk and the systemic issues of race, gender, and socioeconomics that affect us all. In a society that weaponizes Blackness to maintain white supremacy—Amanda uses imagery as force to compel racial equity and justice.
As these texts suggest, King views her production of art as part of a broader range of activity that also encompasses law and activism, supported by her uniquely expansive background that touches each of these areas. While much of her art has been photographic in nature, she has also worked with text, video, and installation, and she likewise views each medium within the context of her wider aims.
King’s work has been shown at venues including SPACES, Karamu House, and the Artist’s Archives of the Western Reserve. She has won an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence in Photography Award, a SPACES Urgent Art Award, and was named a FRONT Triennial fellow in 2022.
