Suchitra Mattai

(Demerara, Guyana, 1973 - )

Indian, American, Guyanese

Suchitra Mattai is a multi-disciplinary artist of Indo-Caribbean descent, currently based in Los Angeles. She was born in Guyana, South America, but has also lived in Halifax and Wolfville, Nova Scotia; Philadelphia; New York City; Minneapolis; Denver; and Udaipur, India. Her family came to Guyana while it was still a British colony, having been recruited to leave the Indian region of Uttar-Pradesh (also under British rule) to work as indentured laborers on sugar plantations, where they encountered gruesome conditions. Mattai is one of hundreds of thousands of Indo-Caribbeans who inherit this history, and her journey gained additional complexity through time in Canada before arrival in the United States. These diverse natural and cultural environments have led Mattai to focus on hidden or overlooked histories, especially those of an international and personal nature.
