Don Harvey

An artist who often combines and works across media—including painting, sculpture and digital photography—Don Harvey is distinguished for work that addresses urban landscape and the impact of environmental degradation. Harvey is noted as an educator and community activist, having served as Director of Educational Programming at the Akron Art Museum (1971-73), Professor of Art at the University of Akron (1973-2000), Visiting Assistant Professor at Oberlin College (beginning in 2005) and editor-in-chief of Dialogue magazine (1980). Harvey was also a co-founder of Cleveland Public Art. Don Harvey was educated at Mankato State University in Minnesota and Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and cites Robert Rauschenberg as an artist he admires. The 1991 recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize for Visual Arts, Harvey has been accorded one-person exhibitions at William Busta Gallery, the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Weston Gallery in Cincinnati, and was the subject of a career survey at the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art in 2001. Harvey’s public projects include The Natural Flats, a collaborative undertaking to identify and set aside open space along the Cuyahoga River, and participation on the Detroit-Superior Bridge Design team.
