Robert Capa

This Hungarian-born photojournalist, famed for his war images, stated that he would much rather “remain unemployed as a war photographer.” Capa advised “if your pictures aren’t good enough you’re not close enough.” He himself ran into the midst of battles, shooting through his camera alongside soldiers shooting real bullets in the Spanish Civil War, World War II, the fighting surrounding the birth of the state of Israel, and other conflicts. In 1954, while covering the war in Indochina, Capa was killed by a landmine. He is also renowned for having founded Magnum. The first picture agency to be owned and controlled by the photographers’ themselves, it was run as a cooperative and continues to be a major force in photojournalism.
