Stephen Tomasko

(Parma, Ohio, 1966 - )

North America, American

Stephen Tomasko received a BA in Art History from Bowling Green State University in 1988 and an MFA in Photography from the University of Delaware in 1991. He has taught photography at the University of Delaware, Cecil College in North East, Maryland and Neumann University in Aston, Pennsylvania. Tomasko has exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at the Light Gallery, part of the Centre for Creative Photography in Adelaide, Australia, and the Matthaei Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Tomasko practices straight photography, meaning he makes few alterations to the original image he captures. With subjects ranging from parade-goers to lush flowering trees, Tomasko’s photographs explore man’s relationship with the environment and his response to seasonal change. In Tomasko’s ongoing Winter Was Hard series, the brilliant color of blooming trees is accentuated with artificial lighting, adding an element of theatricality to the natural setting. As Tomasko describes the series, the photographs are “winter visions of spring realized,” encompassing both a longing for spring and the spring itself.
