Barry Underwood

Barry Underwood received BA degrees in both photography and theater from Indiana University, Northwest in Gary. His dual majors provided him experience in theater to stage his photographs and respect for his photography instructor’s use of flashlights and gels to photograph at night. Underwood subsequently pursued his MFA degree at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he studied with Carl Toth and Michelle Grabner. While there, Underwood regularly traveled to Chicago, assisting with the Culture in Action program, where he worked with Daniel Martinez, Suzanne Lacy, Mark Dion and Inigo Manglano-Ovalle. John Pfahl, Kenneth Josephson and Barbara Kasten are among the photographers he came to admire. He cites John Muir as stimulating his interest in the environment. Underwood is assistant professor and chair of the Cleveland Institute of Art sculpture department. Barry Underwood received the 2011 Cleveland Arts Prize in the Visual Arts and an Individual Excellence grant from the Ohio Arts Council in 2008. His work has been featured in one-person and small group exhibitions, among them SuperNatural: Landscapes by Bruce Checefsky and Barry Underwood (Akron Art Museum, 2011), Inside Out and From the Ground Up (Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, 2012), Of Land and Local (Burlington City Arts, Vermont, 2013) and Moving Nature (Laguna Collee of Art and Design, Laguna Beach, California). Among the collections in which his work is represented are the Cleveland Museum of Art; Elton John Photograph Collection, Atlanta, Georgia; The George Gund Foundation, Cleveland; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
