Art Green

A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, Art Green studied alongside and participated in early exhibitions with Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson and other young Chicago artists who dubbed themselves “The Hairy Who.” Their work was characterized by grotesque subject matter that was rendered in a carefully-finished style. Green’s early paintings were influenced by Surrealist painters Giorgio de Chirico and Rene Magritte and popular culture sources, such as underground comics. The artist moved to Canada when invited to teach at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1969 and subsequently taught at the University of British Columbia and the University of Waterloo in Stratford, Ontario (from 1976). Influenced by his wife, who studied textile design at the Art Institute of Chicago, Green has explored variations on the Necker Cube in his more recent paintings Art Green was accorded a retrospective, Heavy Weather, at the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery in 2005; among the many collections in which his work is represented are the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Gallery of Canada.
