Francis Frith

(Chesterfield, England, 1822 - 1898, Cannes, France)

Europe, British

Like other “view” photographers in the Victorian age, Frith assembled a huge archive of topographical scenes of the British Isles, Europe, and the Near East. Armchair travelers around the world bought his sharply focused, highly detailed images in the hope of obtaining a true record. One London newspaper declared in 1858 that Frith’s meticulous images “carry us far beyond anything that is in the power of the most accomplished painter to transfer to his canvas.”
